People often ask Cliff how to use their lure. Here is what he has to say.
Q: How long will my lure keep?
A: The shelf life of a lure is as long as you want. But only as long as you keep it out of the sunlight. Our lures are preserved and formulated so they will not freeze. We also put them in a special brown bottle that reduces its exposure to sunlight. As a good rule of thumb, store your lure in a cool, dry place.
Q: Does lure have to be fresh or all-natural to work?
A: No. I’ll put my lure up against anything fresh, any time. I bet you will find my lures work just as good if not better. All good lure has a kicker in there, something to make it more attractive to the deer. I have never been successful using 100 percent pure urine or so-called “all-natural” lures.
Q: How much lure should I use?
A: Most hunters and trappers use too much lure. That is actually worse than not using enough. Too much lure will spook a deer. Too little and they are not coming in. I say, if you can smell it, that’s enough. Odor molecules are heavier than air and will reach the ground. If it is not working, before you go adding more lure, try moving. Odors will not move against the wind. If your lure is up wind, the deer will not smell it.
Q: How do I use the lure?
A: The curiosity lures should always be used on a wick and removed when you are not hunting. Deer are nocturnal. If you leave lure in the woods, they will find it and they will find it at night when you are not there. Plus, once they find it, they are not coming back. Rut, Heat and Scrape lures simulate a scent. Rut and Heat lures can be used on a wick and hung from a tree limb or drug along a trail. Using these lures in combination often works well. I recommend using Young Buck in Rut on a drag and Hot Doe on a wick at your stand. Scrape lures should be used on dirt and only on dirt. They are way, way to strong to be used any other way. When put on the ground, it loses about 60 percent of the scent, so we must make it extra concentrated. Even the smallest amount of this on a wick is too much and will turn the deer away rather than luring them in.
Q: Do I need a different lure for different seasons?
A: Use curiosity lures like Early Curiosity and Early Whiz early in the season. Use Doe in Estrus, Hot Doe and Buck in Rut lures during the rut.
